Responsibilities

  • HJFMRI Nigeria is seeking a Phlebotomist/Bio-Sample Collector. This is an entry-level position that works under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager.
  • The Phlebotomist/Bio-Sample Collector will be responsible for the collection and transfer of study participants’ Bio-Specimen from the clinic to the Laboratory.
  • These samples include but are not limited to blood, saliva, nasal swabs, urine, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the collection, accessioning, and documentation of research samples.
  • Support the laboratory services in rapid test diagnostic kits for the diagnosis of emerging infectious diseases.
  • Coordinate the inventory management and stock-taking system of the phlebotomy using appropriate software.
  • Ensure the transfer/transport of collected biological samples under appropriate conditions to the Laboratory.
  • Conduct equipment/environmental monitoring pertinent to his/her daily operation.
  • Participate in essential laboratory operations and activities of the organization as appropriate.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.

Physical Capabilities 

  • Lifting: May require lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Qualifications

Work Environment

  • This position is located at Defense Reference Laboratory, Defense Head quarter, Mogadishu Cantonment, Asokoro Abuja.  The position will be expected to practice safe handling of infectious materials and hazardous chemicals. This laboratory supports work of investigators of diverse scientific disciplines and nationalities and requires good interpersonal skills for effective job performance.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and adherence to quality assurance and quality control. Good understanding of laboratory net-working. Excellent computer skills (including laboratory information system). A good understanding of Nigerian Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defence and good laboratory practice guidelines and policies.
  • Ability to pay attention to details. Able to consistently plan, prioritize and organize work in a way that produces strategic results. Ability to develop and apply SOPs. Ability to work as a part of a team.

Education and Experience

  • Tech degree in Medical Laboratory required
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.
