Job Summary
- Under the direct supervision of the Hygiene Promotion Officer (WASH officer), the incumbent will be required to work as a member of the WASH unit towards the improvement of hygiene promotion and community mobilization activities effectiveness, particularly as part of the WASH intervention, to safeguard and improve the public health of the affected population by promoting safe WASH practices, including appropriate use and maintenance of WASH facilities and services; ensuring appropriate targeted community involvement in the design and delivery of essential WASH services and facilities and sensitization.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:
Job Responsibility #1: Technical
- Assist in promoting safe WASH practices, including appropriate use and maintenance of WASH facilities and services among IDP and host communities.
- Assist the community mobilizers to mobilize the communities to mitigate priority water and sanitation related health risks, promoting the BCC strategy and keeping records of the community volunteers participating in HP activities.
- Assist in communicating effectively with the communities targeted, ensuring that hygiene and health messages are passed on with participatory interventions, allowing ownership and empowerment of the beneficiaries to influence their hygiene and health.
- Assist in selecting, train, and manage Community WASH standing committees, such as Community Water Management Committee members, sanitation facilities caretakers and volunteer hygiene promoter networks within the targeted beneficiaries.
- Participate in the HP campaign by conducting house to house visits focused on hygiene promotion and public health, focus groups and mass campaign using songs, posters, etc. promoting Community Lead Total Sanitation (CLTS) and PHAST methodology and assisting the community mobilizers in the implementation of gathering events.
- Provide a weekly activity progress report to the Hygiene Promotion Officer, highlighting achievements versus targets.
- Comply with CARE policies and practice with respect to child protection, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.
- Assist in the distribution of commodities including timely planning and supervision of the distribution.
- Mobilize and sensitize project participants to actively participate in the implementation of field activities.
- Prompt submission of daily, weekly and monthly reporting of activity progress to the Field officer/ Supervisor.
- Coordinate sensitization of project participants on monthly basis before every distribution
- Timely prepare and submit field reports.
- Directly distribute and/or facilitate the distribution of food to the targeted population within the LGA.
- Maintenance of an effective record and filing system for all distribution data, and other related documents for quick and easy reference.
- Conduct verification of beneficiaries at distribution/redemption point, ensuring that rations are distributed only to the entitled and targeted beneficiaries.
- Provide sensitization sessions on Food Security, Livelihoods and nutrition and hygiene practices.
- Report any problems in a timely manner to the Field Officers or the Project Manager.
Job Responsibility #2: Coordination
- Promote a positive profile of the programme and good understanding among other sectors, partners and communities on WASH related activities.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with all stakeholders Community support groups, community leaders
Other Responsibilities:
- Contribute to CARE’s resource mobilization efforts
- Other Responsibilities as Assigned
QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCE/TECHNICAL SKILLS:
Required
- Excellent communication skills and knowledge of English, Hausa, Kanuri and other local languages.
- Good knowledge of participatory approaches for behavior change (PHAST/SARAR, CHAST, CLTS)
- Ability to write clear reports.
- Education: Diploma, HND/BSc in Health Education, Environmental Engineering or its equivalent
- At least 1 year’s experiences in hygiene promotion in community based program
