Job Summary

  • Under the management of the MJK Area Coordinator, in close cooperation with GBV team members, the protection Assistant will provide Protection Monitoring services and basic counselling interventions, and conduct emotional support groups with women, girls and survivors of gender-based violence.

The Protection Assistant will

  • Work under the technical supervision of the Protection Manager.
  • Provide day to day Protection Monitoring- related activities in Borno
  • Be directly responsible for identifying, documenting and supporting the provision of direct protection assistance to vulnerable women and girls.
  • Coordinate, manage & supervise the direct implementation of community based GBV Prevention, mitigation as well as PSEA efforts..
  • Work with a team of Community Protectionvolunteers, GBV case workersand PSS staff in identifying GBV cases, referrals and follow up.
  • Also provides psychological first aid (PFA), basic counselling services and PSS support for victims of trauma, survivors of GBV as well as other people in need.

Key Functions, Accountabilities and Related Duties/Tasks:

  • Provide psychosocial support (PFA) and counselling for  GBV survivors and refer to case management services when needed.
  • Provide emotional support group sessions to women and girls at risk of or survivors of gender-based violence in compliance with best-practice and MI’s guidelines.
  • Conduct awareness raising to encourage help-seeking behaviour of GBV and SEA survivors.
  • Disseminate action-oriented, specific, inclusive, and supportive messaging on available services for victims.
  • Conduct vulnerability and needs assessment to identify most vulnerable women and girls in the community.
  • Provide targeted assistance for urgent needs of the most vulnerable women and girls who are victims of emergency.
  • Assist in the development of a referral pathway across key services for protection cases and monitors for bottlenecks in the referral pathway.
  • Draft regular weekly reports and feedback on the project implementation and needs that help in program review and decision making.
  • Assist in regular data collection, analysis, and reporting of service provision to protection cases.
  • Ensure that multi-sectoral services delivered by implementing partners are run according to minimum standards, best practices, and IASC Guidelines.
  • Assist in working with communities in developing and disseminating service availability messages.
  • Any other related tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Professional with a University degree in Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Gender Studies, Social Work, International Affairs, Humanitarian Aid or related field, or 2 years experience related.
  • Experience in CCCM setting is well appreciated
  • Minimum experience of 2 years working with vulnerable communities, protection interventions, social service and/or advocacy programs.
  • Must have in-depth technical expertise on Protection, and Gender Based Violence related issues including having a clear understanding of gender inequality, and issues surrounding discrimination and violence against women and girls
  • Experience in the context of emergencies is recommended.
  • Knowledge of concepts and main debates related to issues of rights, sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, ethnic racial equality and adolescence and youth is desirable. 
  • Excellent Analytical, Communication and Report writing skills.
  • Fluency in local languages (Kanuri, Hausa).
  • Be immediately available.
